An unsung hero for a publisher is the printer. Yet, the printer is our life blood. The behind-the-scenes entity that brings our files to life on paper, meets the mailing schedules and in the case of our printer - Cummings - worries about minutia at the last minute. Back in 1995, when I decided to take show season issues twice-monthly I was told it was “impossible” given the quality, color, binding requirements and mailing dates. Wrong answer! It made me more determined to find printers that could think beyond the envelope. And, I did. I had several great printers in those early years, but I found a home in New Hampshire with Cummings. Good grief, in the September issue alone they were accepting file changes only four days before the issue went in the mail! And whatever we require as far as a print run is concerned we do not pay for one additional copy over that! No minimums and no questions. My grateful thanks go to our CEO on the account, Nancy Kennedy, and everyone at Cummings for making it work!

Another unsung hero, closer to home, is a Production Manager and I am blessed, for the past nine years to have Matt Silva. Jamie [Bloomquist] got him to let his hair down a little and be interviewed. Matt juggles a young and growing family scene and me, a sometimes over-emotional and demanding female boss. He gets me, and I love him for that. I know many of you have expressed what a delight he is to work with. He’s calm and focused and he has this magazine at heart. Maybe that comes from juggling his world around two women (me and his beautiful wife, Stephanie) and two lively boys - Drew and Ben to say nothing of the ensuing chaos that each day can bring in his world at The Connection. I just know that for the past nine years Matt has become a rock for me and forges onwards no matter what is going on around him with staff changes etc.

Scott and I will be on our way to Oklahoma as this issue prints (and along with the September issue will be distributed at the show before it begins - Gosh! 504 pages in less than three weeks!!!). If we’re going to talk politics at this show let’s have fun with it. I’m certain we’ll be celebrating America’s First Breed. I wonder who’ll be the first to donate a horse to the next President - food for thought!? See you railside at OKC along with the wonderful team members who are part of our team this year. And we’ll be bringing you our sixteenth Commemorative Issue by Thanksgiving - a unique product that is unparalleled in this industry - and indeed in most breeds.
